Get With The Guidelines--Stroke

Get With The Guidelines–Stroke (GWTG–Stroke) helps ensure continuous quality improvement of acute stroke treatment and ischemic stroke prevention. It focuses on care team protocols to ensure that patients are treated and discharged appropriately. The program is available for implementation at acute care hospitals nationwide.

The program begins with the development of a Primary Stroke Center within your hospital to strengthen acute stroke service delivery infrastructure. The Acute Stroke Treatment Program helps hospitals with this initial step.

GWTG–Stroke identifies hospital staff (champions) to lead, develop and mobilize teams to implement treatment and discharge guidelines for patients in acute care hospitals. The guidelines-based treatment is consistently measured and evaluated using an exclusive and customized Web-based tool called the Patient Management ToolTM* (PMT).

The Toolbox contains resources to help implement GWTG–Stroke in your hospital. Implementation steps are:
  1. Develop a Primary Stroke Center.
  2. Identify champion(s) and build a team.
  3. Assess your treatment rates.
  4. Evaluate baseline data and determine areas for improvement.
  5. Refine processes, protocols and systems.
  6. Implement your changes.
  7. Continue your pursuit of clinical excellence.
