Commit to Check your blood pressure at least twice a month;

Change to healthier habits; and Control your blood pressure!

Through Check It! Connecticut, the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) are encouraging individuals, community organizations, and employers throughout the state to focus on improving blood pressure in the first Check It! Challenge.

The challenge is modeled after Check. Change. Control.®, a four-month long evidence-based program that couples health lessons with bi-monthly blood pressure readings, focusing on self-monitoring. Our goal is to lower systolic blood pressure by an average of 10mmHg among participants with high blood pressure.

Why Check It! Connecticut?

  • Heart disease and stroke are the first and fifth leading causes of death for CT residents.
  • Approximately 28% of adult residents have been told they have high blood pressure by a health professional.
  • One in three U.S. adults over the age of 20 (85.7 million) has high blood pressure.
  • At age 50, total life expectancy is 5 years longer for someone without high blood pressure, compared to someone with it.
  • A 10mmHg drop in systolic blood pressure, or a 5mmHg drop in diastolic blood pressure, can cut your risk of stroke death in half.
  • Compared with whites, blacks develop high blood pressure earlier in life, and their average blood pressure is much higher.

Blood pressure control is why.
